Learn an Excel Feature: Picture Links (or Camera Snapshots)

Today I want to introduce a new excel feature to you, called as Picture link.
Well, picture links are not really new, they are called as camera snapshots in earlier versions. They provide a live snapshot of a range of cells to you in an image. So that you can move the image, resize it, position it wherever you want and when the source cells change, the picture gets updated, immediately.
What is the use of Picture Links or Camera Snapshots?
At the outset picture links may seem like a useless feature. But they are pretty powerful. Here are few sample uses for picture links:
In dashboards & reports: Usually in dashboards, we need to combine charts, tables of data, conditional formatting etc., all in one sheet. When the size of these are not uniform, aligning them on output sheet could be a huge pain. This is when you can use picture links. First create the individual portions of dashboard in separate worksheets. Then, embed picture links to these portions in final dashboard. Re-size them and align as you see fit.

In micro-charts & sparklines: While Excel 2010 has native support for sparklines and other micro-charts, if you want to create a micro-chart in earlier versions of excel you have to use trickery. This is where picture links can help. You can make a regular chart and take a picture link of that. Then resize the picture so that it fits in to a small area.

In Dynamic Charts: Since picture links are nothing but images with a formula assigned to them, you can easily construct dynamic charts & dynamic dashboards using these.

In shared workbooks: When you share a workbook with a colleague or boss, a common worry is what if they change formulas or edit something. This is where picture links can be of great use. You can embed a picture link of actual data so that no one can edit it.
How to insert a picture link in Excel – 3 step tutorial:
To insert a picture link to your data, just follow these 3 steps:
Select the cells. Press CTRL+C
Go to a target cell. From home ribbon select Paste > As picture > Picture link option (see image below)
That is all. Your picture link is live. Move it or play with it by changing source cells.
Do you use Picture Link / Camera Snapshot ?
I have been a fan of picture links / camera snapshots ever since I learned about them. I have used them in various dashboards, reports, workbooks to wow my clients, bosses and colleagues. However, one problem with picture links / camera snapshots is that, they do not print well. So I avoid using them for workbooks that get printed alot.

I love picture links, great for overlaying on graphs, I also find them great for building thermometer graphs by combining shapes, text, conditional formatting, sparklines in creative ways!
Its also a great way to shrink items into a smaller space or even change the aspect ratio of tables!

Nice tip. Thanks, Chandoo. I’m starting to run into some file size issues with my dashboard project (it’s actually a series of dashboards, with one for each department). Do the picture links use more or less data than actual cell contents? It would be nice if you could do this with charts as well.

Remember you can save files as an Excel Binary Workbook
They are generally a lot smaller than .xlsx/m files

I’ve never really used picture links, but your suggestion about putting them in a dashboard could be useful. Especially if they aren’t printed regularly.

This is an awesome feature. Most of my dashboards are just a series of camera snapshots. I move and re-size them to fit space. It is like having all of the best features of publisher or powerpoint in an excel presentation.

I use pictures a lot in spreadsheets and Powerpoint presentation, but everytime I update or refresh the original date I have to go through the machinations of special copy, pasting and resizing to fit. How can I get the pictures to update automatically once the original data/information has changed? This would help me and my crew of 32 here so much if we could solve this without doing a macro or special gyrations. Help please kind Masters of Excel.

I have been using this feature till now succesfullly in all my dashboard reports as well as sending snapshots through email (we use Lotus).
Just wanted to share a quick way to take a snapshot as an alternative..Hope you will find it useful-
Excel- 2007
1- Go to customization of Quick access toolbar
2- Go to ‘All Commands’
3- Search and select ‘Camera’
4- Click Add>>
This should add Camera tool to the quick access toolbar. Feel free to use just like any other tool on the quick access toolbar from there on!!
Excel- 2003. This feature is also available in 2003 through quick access toolbar customization.
Do let me know your inputs.

I use this quite regularly, but I can’t seem to figure out how to get my project related snapshot/s to show up when specific project is selected from drop down list. I use the index function for all the other information, but the snapshot/s puzzle me.

Hi I am new to the site and doing dashboards. I have 4 sets of tables, formated as tables, with monthly totals for each subsidiary. When I copy and try to paste as a picture link it is greyed out. When I remove the Table format i can create picture links for the tables individually but not as a group.
I am using Excel 07. Any reason why this is happening?

Hello Hui, thanks for the quick response, and sorry not to be clearer…I want the hyperlink for, say, day lily (blue writing) on sheet 1 to be clicked and to highlight or select a photo on sheet 2. Eexcel wants a cell address, but the photo “floats,” and I cannot select it. Is this because the photo is an object, maybe? Can I anchor or embed the formatted photo to a cell address, or better, a range? Alternatively, could a hyperlink select just a page tab and I can put one photo per page (less elegant). Thanks, am really excited about the possibilities for Excel.

In this tutorials on Google Maps we will show to you how
you can Cutomize the Google Maps to make it blend with
your websites templates . So for this the three things we
are going to deal with is
a) mapTypeIds
This is used to specify the differenet map Types we
want in our map .If we donot set this explicitly it will
render all three type(RoadMap ,Satellite ,Hybrid)
by default. In this tutorial we will be creating and
using our Customized Map named "RailwayIndia".
b)MapTypeStyle
This will be used to define where and how we will
be applying our styles on Google Maps . It has 3
attributes
1) featureType : It defines on which map element
we will be applying your styles .It was a number
of values which we will learn shortly like transit,
administrative etc .Here's the full list
administrative Apply the rule to administrative areas.
administrative.country Apply the rule to countries.
administrative.land_parcel Apply the rule to land parcels.
administrative.locality Apply the rule to localities.
administrative.neighborhood Apply the rule to neighborhoods.
administrative.province Apply the rule to provinces.
all Apply the rule to all selector types.
landscape Apply the rule to landscapes.
landscape.man_made Apply the rule to man made structures.
landscape.natural Apply the rule to natural features.
poi Apply the rule to points of interest.
poi.attraction Apply the rule to attractions for tourists.
poi.business Apply the rule to businesses.
poi.government Apply the rule to government buildings.
poi.medical Apply the rule to emergency services
(hospitals, pharmacies, police, doctors, etc).
poi.park Apply the rule to parks.
poi.place_of_worship Apply the rule to places of worship, such as
church, temple, or mosque.
poi.school Apply the rule to schools.
poi.sports_complex Apply the rule to sports complexes.
road Apply the rule to all roads.
road.arterial Apply the rule to arterial roads.
road.highway Apply the rule to highways.
road.local Apply the rule to local roads.
transit Apply the rule to all transit stations and lines.
transit.line Apply the rule to transit lines.
transit.station Apply the rule to all transit stations.
transit.station.airport Apply the rule to airports.
transit.station.bus Apply the rule to bus stops.
transit.station.rail Apply the rule to rail stations.
water Apply the rule to bodies of water.
2)ElementType : It basically takes two values
a)geometry :- whether you want to apply the
style to the geometry of the map element .
For eg if you have selected road as a feature
type you can apply specific styles and colors
to the road shapes .
b) label :- Applying style to the labels .With
reference to the above example , customizing the
style of Road Names .
c) all : style will be applied to both
3) stylers :
This will define the style of the featureType
you have selected . Below I have listed the
gamma number Gamma. Modifies the gamma by raising the lightness to the
given power. Valid values:
Floating point numbers, [0.01, 10], with 1.0 representing no
change.
hue string Sets the hue of the feature to match the hue of the color supplied
. Note that the saturation and lightness of the feature is conserved,
which means that the feature will not match the color supplied
exactly. Valid values: An RGB hex string, i.e. '#ff0000'.
invert_lightness boolean Inverts lightness. A value of true will invert the lightness of the
feature while preserving the hue and saturation.
lightness number Lightness. Shifts lightness of colors by a percentage of the
original value if decreasing and a percentage of the remaining
value if increasing. Valid values: [-100, 100].
saturation number Saturation. Shifts the saturation of colors by a percentage of
the original value if decreasing and a percentage of the remaining
value if increasing. Valid values: [-100, 100].
visibility string Visibility: Valid values: 'on', 'off' or 'simplifed'.
So lets start with the coding :
First of all we will decide what we want to customize and how ?
In this tutorial we will be creating a customized Indian Railways
Maps . So we have selected featureType as transit.railway for
this and we have decided to use invert_lightness feature for
landscape so that it gives better view of the Railways .

This is a GREAT tutorial! You did an excellent job. I have a Google hobby blog, and was reading the Kotke blog and then Programmable Web, where I saw your link in the comments. That is how I arrived here.
I'm just about to publish a little post about the Google Maps without Maps, with reference to Google Maps Styles, and will mention your blog (I'm on wordpress dot com, so I'll do a trackback to you).
One question though: Google is deprecating so many of its API's between now and the end of 2011. Will this affect usage of Google Maps and styles? Or only for serious developers, not for casual users? By casual users, I mean people like me, who include Google maps in my blog entries using iframes based on Google Maps directions for embedding.

in your blog , and Elle don't worry about depreciation ,
this tutorials is made with the latest version of Google
Map i.e v3 and Google still supports the old versions of
Google Maps .
New features are still being added in Google Maps v3
,you can check the Google Maps section on this blog and who
knows you may find out something to integrate into your
blog .

Barlas trace their origin to Qarchar Barlas, head of one of Chaghadai's regiments. According to The Secret History of the Mongols—a 13th century epic written during the reign of Ögedei Khan—Qarchar Barlas was a descendent of the legendary Mongol warlord 'Bodonchir (Bodon Achir; Bodon'ar Mungqaq) who was also considered to be the direct ancestor of Genghis Khan. After the Mongol conquest of Central Asia, the Barlas settled in Turkistan (which then became also known as Moghulistan - "Land of Mongols") and intermingled to a considerable degree with the local Turkic and Turkic-speaking population, so that at the time of Timur's reign the Barlas had become thoroughly Turkicized in terms of language and habits. Additionally, by adopting Islam, the Central Asian Turks and Mongols also adopted the Persian literary and high culture which had dominated Central Asia since the early days of Islamic influence. Persian literature was instrumental in the assimilation of the Timurid elite to the Perso-Islamic courtly culture
The word Mīrzā is derived from the Persian term ‘Amīrzāde which literally means "child of the ‘Amīr" or "child of the leader" in Persia. ‘Amīrzād in turn consists of the Arabic title ‘Amīr (engl. Emir), meaning "commander", and the Persian suffix -zād, meaning "birth" or "lineage". The title Mirza was most commonly used by the Turkic clan called Barlas. The Barlas people were the chief tribe of the Timurids and used Mirza as a title before the given name and Baig (also spelt 'Beg') as the surname for all the patriarchs. Thus creating the Mirza-Baig lineage. Mirza titles were given by the kings, sultans or emperors to their sons and grandsons, or even distant kins. Noblemen loyal to the kings also received this Noble titles, although their usage differed.
The name "Baig" is derived from the Turkic word Beg, or Bey, which means chief or lord (i.e. leader/commander). The spelling 'Baig' was most probably popularized, for ease of pronunciation, during the British colonial rule of the Indian Subcontinent. Baig was also a title given to honorary members of the Barlas clan, and was used as the family name for their children.
Chughtai area in 13th Century ( see below)
The name Chughtai is a distorted form of Chaghadai, which comes from the Mongol Chagan (white) and the suffix –dai. The word Chaghadai thus means he who is white. The clan gets its name from Chagatai Khan, a son of the legendary Genghis Khan. The mother of Babar, the founder of the Mughal dynasty in South Asia, belonged to the Chughtai clan.
In order to study the movement of Barlas clan let us study the historical record of Mughal emperors. Mughal emperors were descendants of the Timurids (1370-1405) the Barlas clan (see below):

Timur's son, Miran Shah (1366 - April 1408)( also a town in Pakistan), and was granted governorship of Qandahar in 1383. That same year, he destroyed a rebellion against Timurid authority by the Kartids.
In 1396 Miran Shah was given control of Azerbaijan, principally the cities of Soltaniyeh, the former capital of the Ilkhans, and Tabriz. In the summer of 1398 he marched from Tabriz with the goal of subduing the Jalayirids of Baghdad, but was forced to call off the expedition. Meanwhile, rumors had come to Timur that his son was planning to betray him. In 1399 Timur sent a force under his nephew Sulaiman Shah to summon Miran Shah. The latter came with Sulaiman Shah willingly back to his father, where he was deposed of his governorship and assigned to his father's company for four years. His friends and advisors were executed.
The line of Miran Shah continued to play a prominent role in the remnants of the Timurid Empire, when Abu Sa'id came to power in Transoxiana. He is also the ancestor of Babur, the founder of the Mughal Empire.
Zahir ud-din Muhammad Babur learned about the riches of Hindustan and conquest of it by his ancestor, Timur Lang, in 1503 at Dikh-Kat, a place in the Transoxiana region. It is an ancient name used for the portion of Central Asia corresponding approximately with modern-day Uzbekistan, Tajikistan and southwest Kazakhstan.
Babur was the fruit of two greatest conquerors of Central Asia (connected to the family of Timur and Jenghiz Khan). Babur became the king of Farghana at the age of eleven, as soon as his father died. Soon after ascending the throne of Farghana, Babur annexed Samarkand, but fell ill the same year. His ministers gave up hope of Babur's recovery, and put his brother Jahangir on the throne of Farghana. But Babur miraculously recovered to see Jahangir on the throne. Jahangir had firmly established by then, and on the other side, Samarkand was occupied by his cousin Ali. Babur thus became wanderer for almost one year, without kingship.
A year later, Babur captured the capital of Farghana and Samarkand but lost in the same year to Uzbegs. Babur was thus left with nothing, and aimed for his luck there onwards. Meanwhile, the political situation in Kabul gave him a opportunity to set his foot in Kabul and managed to rule Kabul from 1504 AD till 1520 AD. It is during the his reign he regained Samarkand and Bukhara but utterly failed in retaining it. This disappointment led him to eye on India than on the lost land.
In his memoirs he wrote that after he had acquired Kabul (in 1514), he desired to regain the territories in Hindustan held once by Turks. He started his exploratory raids from September 1519 when he visited the Indo-Afghan borders to suppress the rising by Yusufzai tribes. He undertook similar raids up to 1524 and had established his base camp at Peshawar. In 1526, Babur defeated the last of the Delhi Sultans, Ibrahim Shah Lodi, at the First Battle of Panipat. To secure his newly founded kingdom, Babur then had to face the formidable Rajput Rana Sanga of Chittor, at the Battle of Khanwa. Rana Sanga offered stiff resistance but was defeated.
