EDWARD TENNER IN THE ATLANTIC: Why Society Is Running Out Of Vital Medications.

We need to shift from Just-In-Time to Just-In-Case.

REPORT: UNIVERSITY OF KENTUCKY GUN OWNER FIRED OVER GUN IN CAR? “All this, despite the fact that Mitchell had a Kentucky concealed carry permit, believed he had fully complied with Kentucky law governing concealed carry, and therefore cooperated fully with police and university authorities. . . . So……. What’s up with the University of Kentucky?” Oddly, in a time of constricting budgets, they seem to be going out of their way to do things that will play badly with Kentucky voters. But I’m seeing this at other universities as well.

MEMPHIS FLOOD UPDATE: A musician friend emails: “I’m currently doing some seasonal work for the Memphis in May International Festival which takes place all month in Tom Lee Park on the river’s edge downtown. Just this week it was announced that the World Championship Barbecue Competition next weekend (which is one of the festival’s biggest events) would be moved to a new location, for the first time ever, because the river will be in the park itself very soon. This week we are busy evacuating to the fairgrounds. I’ve personally never seen a river look like the Mississippi does now. I had to run an errand in West Memphis, AR a couple of days ago and from I-40 across the bridge, you could see that the water covered what once were fields for over two miles west. Working in Tom Lee Park, every time a barge goes by, waves come up over what once was the river bank and deposit debris in the park. Pretty soon, barges will not have enough height clearance to pass under the I-55 bridge. I saw one yesterday that looked like it had about 2 or 3 feet of clearance. It is amazing.”

Of course, a shutdown in Mississippi barge traffic would have supply-chain consequences of all sorts.

Well, you’ve come to the right place.”

BOOK-COOKING FAIL: New rules don’t stop newspaper circulation fall: Most big newspapers still lose circulation despite new rules counting more copies. “The figures released Tuesday, for the six months ending in March, mark the first time that newspapers have calculated circulation under the looser guidelines from the Audit Bureau of Circulations. Among other things, the changes allow publishers to include free copies given to newspaper employees and local schools; before copies had to be bought to be counted. The changes also make it easier for newspapers to lump separate editions under different titles into one total.”

JAMES TARANTO: Why the Left needs racism. “Baselessly accusing their political foes of racism is a way in which today’s liberals attempt to incite fear and loathing of ‘the other.’ As we argued last year, this serves a political purpose in that it helps persuade blacks not to consider voting Republican. But it serves a psychological purpose as well. It reinforces white liberals’ sense of their own superiority.” Yes, calling other white people racist is Stuff White People Like.

JERUSALEM IMAM: Obama Will Soon Hang For Killing Bin Laden. Okay, first, any talk of hanging is just plain racist. Stupid racist imam.

Second, what’s this about how dogs should not rejoice after killing a lion? If I were a dog, and I killed a lion, I’d damn sure rejoice.

But Osama was more of a jackal, you know? And if this dumbass keeps talking, people might get the idea that we’re at war with Islam or something. And trust me, your Imam-ness, you don’t want Americans to decide that.

AN “HONOR KILLING” IN WARREN, MICHIGAN. “”Every time he would call her, it would just seem like he had just like some sick obsession. It wasn’t just like a stepfather-daughter relationship. LEON PANETTA, NOT OBAMA, ORDERED HIT ON BIN LADEN? Let me just say that I find the sourcing on this not too believable. The story might be true, but I’ll need a lot more convincing. This is telling too many people what they want to hear. And I’ve been following “White House Insider” for a while, but, well, I’m not convinced — and I really hope he’s bogus, because if he’s for real, God help us.

THOUGHTS ON JUSTICE AND REVENGE:

Contemplating a “balls[y]” liberal president confidently throwing his weight around in foreign affairs is a strange sensation for conservatives and liberals alike. But it’s an especially welcome sensation for liberals. Admit it, isn’t it a relief not having to come up with a tortuous explanation of how real patriotism is a matter of having the moral fortitude to preside intelligently over the country’s relative decline by “leading from behind.” Yet liberals should be self-conscious enough to admit that the rush of satisfaction they’re getting contemplating Obama’s newfound bellicosity is a guilty pleasure. . . .

Liberals can bask in their newfound admiration for Obama or uphold their vision of the international system. But it’s hard to see how, in good conscience, they can do both of those things.

Read the whole thing.

UPDATE: A reader emails:

FIRST THE QUEEN, NOW THIS: Bush declines Obama invite to Thursday’s Ground Zero event. “Only two possibilities. One: Bush recognizes that this is, more or less, an Obama campaign commercial and would rather not be part of it. Two: Bush doesn’t want to encroach on the singular role that Obama, as president, should rightly have in leading the ceremonies marking Bin Laden’s demise. Given how gracious Dubya has been in retirement, does anyone doubt that the second explanation is correct? Needless to say, it was also gracious of The One to invite him.”

Like many Americans – and the Nobel Peace Prize committee – I naively feared he was actually serious when he initially proposed shutting down Guantanamo, trying detainees in American civilian courts, and prior consultation with the international community. Little did I know that this untested young Commander-in-Chief would muster the courage to read his weekly Gallup numbers and, in one daring unilateral extra-judicial targeted hit job, toss aside every single idiotic foreign policy principle of his election campaign. Perhaps most satisfyingly, it was a mission made possible thanks to information extracted by methods he previously banned as ‘illegal torture.’”

WHAT IT’S LIKE to live with the Nissan Leaf. “Speaking of charging: We have just now received our first PG&E bill and it looks like the Leaf is responsible for between $90-110 of this past month’s electrical bill. Given that we have covered approximately 1,400 miles in that time, it is fair to say that our operating cost on the car is somewhere in the neighborhood of $0.07/mile. So, at $4.50/gallon, that gives us an equivalency of around 64 mpg. This is not quite the 99 mpg estimated on the EPA sticker, but not bad so far either.”

WALTER RUSSELL MEAD ON OSAMA: Bad Man Down.

President Obama has been able to announce the news that Americans have longed to hear for the last ten years: Osama bin Laden is dead, his corpse flung into the sea.

Better, he is dead at America’s hands.

Better yet, he died a beaten man. His bid for the leadership of global Islam had failed, and Osama lived long enough to see other movements and other ideas shoulder his perverted synthesis aside. Osama was yesterday’s man, and he knew it.

And he knew we got him at the end, too. Plus this:

Above all, this is good for the United States. Presidents Bush and Obama have not gotten everything right since 9/11, but on this matter they both did pretty well. The United States was relentless and determined in hunting him down, pursuing tens of thousands of leads all over the world. We left no doubt in anyone’s mind that getting Osama Bin Laden was a priority, but we did a pretty reasonable job (except when demagogic politicians were out on the stumps) of keeping our eyes open and our mouths shut.

Indeed.

THAT WAS THEN. NOW ASSASSINATION IS GOOD: New Yorker Mag called the special ops team today hailed by Obama, VP Cheney’s “personal assassination team.”

Related: Indian media reporting on Pakistan protecting bin Laden.

And, from Bryan Preston:

On a more serious note, the raid in Pakistan that ended Osama bin Laden’s war crime spree is very good not only for American morale, but for American credibility. The kinetic military action in Libya has been doing a bang-up job of sapping both, and fracturing NATO, for weeks. This unambiguous success helps end that skid, and might just turn President Obama into an actual president. As others have said elsewhere, for the first time in my adult life I’m actually proud of him. I still won’t vote for him and I encourage others to oppose his re-election too, but at least when it was time to make a serious decision, he made the right one.

The Abbottabad raid also tells the world one more time that America is not to be messed with. That’s always a useful message to send.

Particularly at this moment, when doubts on that subject were accumulating.

I dunno, but if I were Osama, I would have left a series of semi-custom tapes to be released as appropriate after my death: “Bwahahaha, you Americans missed me with your cruise missile/drone attack/special forces raid/sniper/exploding cigar. . . . ” Just to keep the FUD going for a while. I don’t know if Osama did that, but I would keep the possibility in mind.
